Growing Hair

Someone wrote to ask: what is the best way to grow hair on your head ?

While you can do things that will encourage growth, and there are products and styling tricks that will make the hair you have appear to be more full and thick, you can't really make the hair on your head grow.

Hair growth, density, and texture appears to be largely genetically predetermined. Male pattern baldness seems to be caused by genetic and hormonal predisposition. There are treatments available, both drugs and transplants.

If male pattern baldness is not the problem, then there are a few simple things you can do that may help your hair grow.

The main thing is to keep yourself healthy. Eat a balanced diet. Vitamin E supplements are often recommended for hair, skin, and fingernail growth.

You may have been told to brush your hair 100 strokes every night before bed by an older woman - this used to be standard advice from mother to daughters. In fact, this does appear to help as the massaging action of brushing increases blood circulation to the scalp, making for a healthier scalp, and hair.

It almost goes without saying that you want to avoid harmful hair treatments, such as permanents and coloring.

And witchy folks like myself will tell you that your hair will grow faster if you trim it while the moon is waxing - that is growing from New Moon to the Full. (And if you want hair to grow slower - such as bangs, trim them as the moon is waning) I don't have any scientific references for that one though ;)

There is a lengthy and detailed article about hair care and hair growth here by Dr. John Gray and provided by the Proctor and Gamble Hair Care Research Center.
