Borderline Personality Disorder
This depends on the individual. The only people that seem to truly be completely unaware of their effect on others are the full blown sociopaths. They seem to be unaware completely that the rest of us are even living beings, able to suffer, with a right to live - the only "real" person in their world is themselves. Speaking strictly for myself, I don't think any sort of mental condition is any excuse for hurting others. In fact, I don't think there is ANY valid excuse for hurting other people, ever. It may happen unintentionally at times, through necessity, inattention, or a lack of awareness. When that happens, an apology and forgiveness - on both sides - is in order. You cannot carry hurt forever. Forgive whoever has hurt you - for carrying that negativity on in your own life only makes the hurt worse. You have to forgive and go on. It may be necessary for you to also decide to release that person from your life, if they go on hurting you. Or if you cannot do that, to accept them as they are and decide you will not let them hurt you any more and take steps to prevent that. Much easier said than done, believe me I really do know. We cannot change others, we can only change ourselves. We can change our reactions to how they treat us, or we can change our lives so that they are no longer able to hurt us, or remove them from our lives. Yes, I have told someone "Call me if you ever get your shit together. I love you, but I will not allow you to go on treating me this way." and walked out.
