Mistress of Mellyn by Victoria Holt

This book was published in 1960. Hard to imagine it was really that long ago. Victoria Holt was the queen of the Gothic Romance. As much as they were potboilers (and boy, this is one) her writing made it possible to carry them off. She could make you care about that poor governess, and make the romantic interest a most sinister, yet attractive man no woman in the throes of "loving the bad man" can resist. What a relief to discover he is really a good man, a grieving widower, and some wicked woman no one would ever suspect was doing the killing. And of course, the children are either spoiled brats or crazy, but the tender, loving care of our heroine brings them around. :D Even Pearlie likes it:
