So who are the fey?

Just who and what the fey folk are is a matter of belief. You can no more prove the existance of the fey than you can prove the existance of gods. Yet many people (including myself) believe in them wholeheartedly.

Since the dawn of mankind there have been myths, legends, and oral histories that refer to fey folk of one sort or another. Sometime they are little people who live in the forest, others celestial nymphs who assist the gods and goddesses in creation, and other times mischievious or helpful spirits. But hardly any culture is without some tale of them.

Since Tolkein made "fairy tales" okay for adults, fantasy writers, artists, and movie makers have taken the old myths and created new ones. From Laurel K. Hamilton's barely veiled erotica to the cannibalistic fey in the Fairy Meat role playing game, and of course Tolkein's High Elves, everyone has their own idea of what the fey might be like. And they are all different!

So for my own purposes on this website, the term fey will be used as an all inclusive word for all the myriad beliefs and stories surrounding mythical, legendary, magical and fantastic "people".

Shhh...I don't think they care WHAT we call them.
